These painting by renaissance painters using pastels are a beautiful example of the colour I plan on using in this project. They appear soft and delicate and in reality early pastels were they were described by Anton Raphael as “flowers and butterflies in the gardens of art”. These gentle colours will add a calming element to these quite dramatically lit portraits. I want these background to signify the soft nature behind these animals that are sometimes perceived as aggressive. These colours are very often associated with babies and I hope that the use of them in my pictures make the viewer look at the dogs in a softer light. I have chosen to photograph the dogs with a direct light and to shoot from below to elevate them and I don’t want the coloured backgrounds to undermine the strength and power that these animals have but to compliment the pose of the animal with a soft feeling as well.
